Japan’s Beef Imports Continue Recovery

In February, Japan imported 45,751 metric tons (mt) of beef, 50.2 percent more than February 2002, according to Japanese government statistics. The U.S. provided 21,421 mt of the total, Australia, 21,861 mt. Imports of U.S. product were 36.8 percent higher than February 2002, and U.S. chilled beef imports were 35.6 percent higher at 7,972 mt. Japan’s January inventory was 101,741 mt, 31.5 percent down from a year earlier.

Traders report to USMEF-Japan that beef retail sales in March are up 10-35 percent over a year ago and approaching pre-BSE levels. USMEF expects its U.S. beef spring campaign (the second “Aisareru” Beef Campaign), which started on March 15, will increase U.S. beef sales.
