Bilingual Labeling Requirements Posted On FSIS Web Site

As we reported in March, China is imposing new bilingual labeling requirements on all its imports. The labels are required to have product name, specifications, production place, production date, quality guarantee period, storage temperature, plant number and destination in the Chinese language. On April 2, the Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) published the new requirements in its online library (http://www.fsis.usda.gov/OFO/export/explib.htm). Exporting members may wish to remind the inspector in charge to order the new forms. The following is a translation of the requirements for labels:

Hong Kong/Guangzhou Travel Advisory

Due to the outbreak of SARS, both the Department of State (www.state.gov) and the World Health Organization (www.who.int) issued new travel advisories (April 2) discouraging nonessential travel to Hong Kong and Guangzhou. USMEF also advises its members to avoid nonessential travel to these areas until further notice.  Previous WHO travel advisories have been issued for Hanoi, Vietnam, Singapore, and other parts of China.

The organizers of the May 6-9 HOFEX food show have decided to postpone the event to an undetermined later date.  USMEF member companies planning to attend HOFEX should contact hongkong@usmef.org with any questions regarding specific cancellation procedures.  USMEF’s Hong Kong office remains open albeit with reduced staffing. USMEF is evaluating other scheduled Hong Kong/China activities on a daily basis.
