Importers Apply For 75 Percent Of Beef, 77 Percent Of Pork Quotas
On March 24, applications for allocations of the new Russian import quotas were announced by a committee put together by the Ministry of Economic Development and Trade (MEDT) and the Agricultural Ministry. Applications were due on March 20, and, despite predictions that less than half the quota would be applied for since many companies are no longer in business and some of them were created solely for one transaction and then disbanded, companies did apply in time for 75 percent of the available beef quota, 77 percent of the pork quota and 64 percent of the poultry quota. The next step is for the MEDT to determine how unused quota will be distributed. A decision is expected this week.
The Russian press reports that the MEDT has decided to include chilled beef (code 0201) without increasing the size of the quota, but this has not been confirmed.
