Glen Keppy Appointed Associate Administrator For Farm Service Agency

“Glen Keppy is very deserving of the recently-announced position at USDA. I cannot think of anyone more qualified to address the issues of the upcoming farm bill than Glen,” said USMEF Chairman John W. Bellinger on the news that former USMEF Secretary/Treasurer Glen Keppy was appointed associate administrator for the Farm Service Agency (FSA) by USDA Secretary Mike Johanns yesterday (April 20). “His experience in many areas of agriculture is invaluable. We will miss Glen as an officer of USMEF but look forward to working with him at USDA.”

As associate administrator, Keppy will oversee the management of FSA farm and farm loan programs and commodity operations activities.

“Glen’s expertise in agriculture will make him a valuable member of the USDA team,” said Johanns. “I look forward to welcoming Glen, a fellow Iowa native, and I’m confident he will advance USDA’s commitment of service to our farmers and ranchers.”

Keppy and his family have owned and operated a diversified crop and livestock family farm in eastern Iowa for 34-years. As well as his service on the USMEF Executive Committee, Keppy served as chairman of the National Pork Board’s Trade Committee, president of the National Pork Producers Council and vice chairman of the Iowa Ag Value Committee. He has also received the Iowa Farm Bureau’s Distinguished Service Award.

Keppy’s appointment will mean a USMEF officer vacancy. In accordance with the bylaws, the USMEF Nominating Committee will present a new secretary/treasurer candidate for approval by the board of directors at the Las Vegas board of directors meeting next month.

AgOTC Says Bill To Mandate Container Screening Will Mean Expense And Delay

A bill in the House of Representatives, which would mandate extensive screening of every container loaded in a foreign port destined for the U.S., would add expense, delay, and congestion in foreign ports, says the Agriculture Ocean Transportation Coalition (AgOTC). The AgOTC is a member of the Supply Chain Security Coalition, a group of importers, carriers and others concerned with the potentially disruptive impact of the port security legislation being considered on Capitol Hill. This coalition is having its first meeting on Monday, April 24, at 1:30 p.m. in the RILA office, 1700 N. Moore Street, Suite 2250, Arlington, VA 22209. The group has composed a draft letter opposing the “Sail Only if Scanned” (H.R. 4899) bill, which requires 100 percent container screening overseas and high tech seals.
