USDA Confirms “Inconclusive” Screening Test For BSE Is Negative

The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) announced today the “inconclusive” test for Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (BSE) reported on November 18 has been confirmed by the National Veterinary Services Laboratory (NVSL) to be negative and the animal does not have BSE.

The immunohistochemistry, recognized as the “gold standard” test was performed twice by the NVSL, located in Ames, Iowa, to ensure the animal does not have BSE. Over 121,000 samples have been collected through the enhanced surveillance program implemented in June and, with today’s announcement, no positives have been confirmed.

This exercise illustrates the U.S. beef industry’s commitment to stringent adherence to federal testing mandates and USDA transparency in reporting in addition to confirming the safety of U.S. beef.
