U.S. Pork Wins Over Fans at Taiwan Jazz Festival

American jazz and barbecued U.S. pork were on the menu last week at the 2009 Taichung Jazz Festival, held Oct. 17-25 in Taichung City, Taiwan.  With support from the Pork Checkoff, USMEF teamed with the USDA Agricultural Trade Office, Kraft Foods Asia, Hotel ONE, and several additional cosponsors to bring the American Blues & BBQ Pavilion to the weeklong event, which draws about 300,000 visitors each year.

The American Blues & BBQ Pavilion was a popular destination for the huge crowd, as USMEF offered tasting samples from Johnsonville, Snake River Farms, Cargill, Smithfield and other providers of U.S. pork. The samples enticed many visitors to purchase U.S. pork offerings, asnearly 45 pounds of sliced pork and 600 Johnsonville sausages were sold on opening day of the festival alone. Des Restaurant Vogue, a popular local restaurant that offered U.S. pork at its festival booth, also sold more than 1,000 pork skewers and pork burgers on opening day.

“Nothing goes better with great American jazz and blues than delicious barbecued pork,” said Joel Haggard, USMEF senior vice president for the Asia-Pacific region. “It was a very successful event for USMEF and the companies who participated, as we were able to bring a truly American flavor to the festival.”

Through August, U.S. pork plus pork variety meat exports to Taiwan for 2009 reached 25,673 metric tons (56.6 million pounds) valued at nearly $40 million. This is a 22 percent increase in volume and a 12 percent increase in value over the same period last year.
