U.S. Beef, Pork Target Wide Audience at Anuga Trade Show in Germany

USMEF showcased U.S. beef and pork for thousands of buyers and importers from across the world at last week’s Anuga 2009 trade show in Cologne, Germany. The biennial, five-day event drew more than 150,000 visitors from about 180 countries and more than 6,500 exhibitors from 97 countries. Turnout from the Middle East rose by more than 30 percent over 2007, while the number of buyers from Asia increased by about 10 percent.

In another important measure of the business opportunities presented at Anuga 2009, nearly 70 percent of visitors surveyed described themselves as decision-makers in their companies’ purchasing and procurement decisions. An additional 18 percent said they played an advisory role in purchasing.

“I was very impressed with the large turnout and the strong interest in U.S. beef and pork that was evident during the show,” said USMEF President and CEO Philip Seng. “Industry representatives saw some great opportunities to make quotes and develop contacts – not only in Europe but also in the Middle East, Russia and other regions. It was also a great chance for USMEF to illustrate our safety assurance programs, showcase our diverse range of products, and expand the interest in U.S. beef and pork overseas.”

Anuga 2009 was the first major promotional event in Europe since the United States and the European Union agreed to a new, duty-free quota for high-quality beef. The new quota opened on August 14.

USMEF’s participation at Anuga 2009 was made possible by the Beef Checkoff and Pork Checkoff programs, as well as the Market Access Program. The next Anuga trade show is set for Oct. 8-12, 2011.
