US Beef, Pork Showcased at Korea’s Largest Food Show

High-quality cuts of chilled U.S. beef and pork, along with a selection of processed items, commanded a high level of interest last week at Seoul Food & Hotel 2010. South Korea’s largest food exhibition was held May 12-15 in Ilsan, a suburb of Seoul. The trade show featured nearly 1,100 exhibitors from 32 countries and 43,000 industry and consumer guests.  USMEF’s presence was made possible through support from the Beef Checkoff and Pork Checkoff Programs.

Seoul Food & Hotel, Korea’s largest food show, drew 43,000 visitors over four days

“Every year, Seoul Food & Hotel allows USMEF to make many great trade contacts as well as to meet everyday consumers and better acquaint them with U.S. beef and pork,” said Jihae Yang, USMEF-Korea director.

A special exhibit allows visitors to separate myth from fact about U.S. beef production

USMEF offered a specially designed booth for consumers called “U.S. Beef Production at a Glance.”  The exhibit explained how U.S. cattle are raised and fed, and gave visitors an up-close view of life on an American ranch. USMEF also unveiled two new consumer activities – a quiz allowing consumers to separate myths from facts regarding U.S. beef and a puzzle fitting of the “To Trust” logo used in a highly successful USMEF imaging campaign.

“We received very positive consumer feedback during the course of the week,” said Min Park, USMEF-Korea senior public relations manager. “With Korean consumers much more accepting of U.S. products, we have more opportunities to implement aggressive consumer activities for both U.S. beef and pork.”

A variety of both fresh and processed U.S. pork products were displayed and sampled

U.S. companies exhibiting at the USMEF pavilion at Seoul Food & Hotel included AMSA International Inc., Certified Angus Beef (CAB), Hatfield, Hormel Foods, Smithfield Foods International Group and Sugardale Foods. Each found a receptive audience as they offered product information and a variety of beef and pork samples throughout the event.

“Since the candlelight demonstrations that occurred two years ago, consumer attitudes toward  U.S. beef have improved dramatically,” said CAB senior manager Daisuke Shimojima. “Visitors were very pleased with CAB’s samples and many inquired as to where CAB products can be purchased.”
