U.S. Beef Fuels Thousands of Runners at Taiwan Event

USMEF teamed with Taiwan’s Mercuries Group to promote healthy and delicious U.S. beef at an eight-kilometer fun run event Sunday, Oct. 26, in Taipei.

The San-Sun-Chiao-Fu foodservice division of Mercuries Group - which owns four large restaurant groups and one large grocery chain - gathered about 10,000 of its employees for the event at Taipei’s Da-Jia River Park to promote an active and healthy lifestyle. USMEF-Taiwan, with support from the Beef Checkoff Program, used the opportunity to share with participants a tasty sampling of U.S. chuck short ribs, attracting more than 1,500 runners to the USMEF booth for samples and information about retail chains throughout Taiwan that sell healthy, nutrient-rich U.S. beef products.

Taiwan was one of the first Asian markets to reopen to U.S. beef following widespread market closures in December 2003, and the island nation has been a consistently strong performer. Taiwan currently ranks as the fourth-largest value market for U.S. beef exports, and (through August) has imported $91.2 million in U.S. beef products in 2008. This represents a 37 percent increase over the same period last year. Taiwan is a particularly strong market for beef muscle cuts, which comprise more than 99 percent of the U.S. beef products it imports.
