U.S. Beef Exports to EU Continue Upward Trend

U.S. beef exports to the European Union (EU) continue to grow, with totals for just the first half of the current quota year (July 2008 through June 2009) on a pace to exceed the total for the entire previous quota year, according to John Brook, USMEF regional director for Europe, Russia and the Middle East.

EU importers filed applications to bring 543 metric tons (1.2 million pounds) of U.S. beef into the region in November, raising the total since the start of the GATT year to 3,609 metric tons (7.9 million pounds).

While the United States is not expected to come close to filling its annual high quality beef quota of 11,500 metric tons (25.4 million pounds), it continues to make progress in the EU.

“This is a very encouraging development, particularly in light of the problems in the global financial markets and the economic downturn in much of the EU,” said Brook.
