U.S. Beef and Pork now Sold Online in St. Petersburg
A pioneering internet-based shop for selling U.S. high quality meat was launched this month in St. Petersburg with support from USMEF-Russia as www.MeatClub.ru came online.
While USMEF efforts have successfully raised the profile of U.S. beef and pork in Russian restaurants and steak houses, few Russian retailers carry items clearly identified as U.S. high quality product. The website www.MeatClub.ru is changing this. Its wide assortment of meat includes beef exclusively from the United States. The Web site estimates that 70 percent of its sales will be U.S. beef. USMEF is currently working to add U.S. pork to the product mix and expects it will be available later this year.
“We are very pleased with www.MeatClub.ru,” said Yuri Barutkin, USMEF St. Petersburg manager. “With the very scarce availability of U.S. beef in the retail market, we view this project as of paramount importance. It allows us to bring U.S. beef and pork closer to consumers and to clearly identify products as U.S.-made and of the highest quality. It will cater to the tastes of those people who know and value U.S. beef and pork but, so far, only had a chance to taste them at restaurants. Now, high quality beef and high quality pork will be accessible to them in their homes.”
For about half the price paid in restaurants, consumers can buy, for example, a 300 gram (approximately three-quarters of a pound) ribeye steak for 440 rubles ($14) at www.MeatClub.ru while a 500 gram (1.1 pound) ribeye at one restaurant goes for 1,350 rubles ($43).
“High quality, marbled beef steaks and pork ribs from the U.S. could become a fantastic and refreshing alternative to “shashlik,” a common domestic pork dish,” said Barutkin. “We are trying to present the tradition of eating U.S. beef and pork at home as fashionable and healthy.
“With its lower operating costs and consequently lower retail prices, www.MeatClub.ru will make U.S. beef and pork accessible to a much wider public and promote them to a very wide and prominent audience, giving U.S. meat the information support it deserves,” said Barutkin.
The online shop will describe the qualities of U.S. beef and pork and how they compare favorably with products from other countries. The site will also provide recipes and cooking tips.
