30-Day Extension To Filing Deadline For Beef Checkoff At Supreme Court

The U.S. Supreme Court granted a 30-day extension to the U.S. Department of Justice and interveners in a case challenging the constitutionality of the Beef Checkoff Program. Under the extension, the Department of Justice will have until the end of the day on Feb. 13, 2004, to file a request for a writ of certiorari, or a request seeking Supreme Court review of the Livestock Marketing Association's lawsuit opposing the checkoff program. The previous deadline for filing the request was Jan. 14, 2004.

South Korea is not ready to lift its ban on imports of Canadian beef imposed following Canada’s bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) case in May. South Korean Agriculture Minister Hur Sung-man told Canada's minister of agriculture and agri-food, Bob Speller, that South Korea "had no choice but to maintain its existing position," in a statement issued after their meeting. South Korea banned imports of U.S. beef on December 24.

Japan Wants All Cattle Tested

The Japanese government will lift its ban on U.S. beef imports if the United States follows Japanese procedures and tests all cattle for BSE before shipping, according to a report in the Japanese newspaper, the Asahi Shimbun.

Trade minister Shoichi Nakagawa reiterated that point in talks Thursday in Washingtonwith Robert Zoellick, the U.S. trade representative.
