Non-Definitive Test Result Reported Last Week Is Negative For BSE
The Veterinary Laboratories Agency in Weybridge, England and the National Veterinary Services Laboratories (NVSL) in Ames, Iowa have both determined the non-definitive test result reported by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) on July 27 is negative for BSE.
Dr. John Clifford, Deputy Administrator of the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS), announced the test results earlier today.
“Our enhanced surveillance program is designed to provide information about the level of prevalence of BSE in the United States, which by any measure is extremely low,” Clifford said in the APHIS news release.
This latest case had little if any direct affect on international trade. USMEF Vice President of Trade Development Richard Fritz said international markets are more focused on receiving epidemiological results from the June 24 BSE case and so far the USDA has already supplied trading partners with a significant amount of information. Although the most recent test has come back negative, it has resulted in USDA re-examining its internal procedures for sample collection and testing.
