Final SRM Rule Notification To Inspectors Released By FSIS

FSIS announced Friday (Aug. 31) the publication of the final specified risk material (SRM) rule to prevent potential human exposure to the BSE agent. The rule also prohibits non-ambulatory cattle entering the human food supply, the use of mechanically separated beef and use of air-injection stunning devices on cattle. The final rule is effective Oct. 1, 2007.  Additionally, as part of this notice, FSIS announced two new directives to inspectors; the directives will consolidate information from previous notices regarding SRM and non-ambulatory disabled cattle.

FSIS inspectors will conduct awareness meetings at U.S. beef plants and processors to advise establishments of regulation changes. For more information, see FSIS Notice 56-07.
