Red Meat Exports Eligible As Ukraine Joins WTO
The following items are eligible for export to Ukraine in accordance to agreements set forth by Ukraine’s accession to the World Trade Organization (WTO).
- Beef and beef products, including bone-in, boneless, offal and processed products derived from cattle produced under an approved AMS LT-30 EV program
- Veal and veal products
- Pork, pork products and casings
Notifications of the new requirements as well as copies of the agreed-upon forms/certificates for U.S. beef and pork were sent to all Ukrainian veterinarians at customs locations on Dec. 25, 2006 by the Ukraine State Department of Veterinary Medicine. The chair of the State Department of Veterinary Medicine also sent an official letter to the U.S. Embassy in Ukraine to specify starting Feb. 14, there are no restrictions on U.S. meat exports, outside of those specified on the certificates.
However, since Ukraine’s accession to the WTO, a failure to acknowledge the new certificates and directives has created problems for exporters at Ukrainian borders.
To further support and facilitate trade under the new agreements, Ukrainian Ambassador Oleh Shamshur issued a letter on Feb. 19 confirming that Ukraine is ready to fulfill all the commitments undertaken in the process of negotiations on Ukraine’s accession to the WTO. To view the letter, access it online.
For more information, also see Export Requirements for Ukraine in the FSIS Export Library and details of the LT-30 EV Program.
If you experience any problems exporting meat to the Ukraine, contact USMEF Export Services staff, Courtney Heller at cheller@usmef.org or Ann Spaeth at aspaeth@usmef.org for assistance.
