Twelve U.S. Pork Slaughter Plants Cleared for Shipment to Russia, Others Pending

Weekend news reports provided varying accounts regarding approval of U.S. pork plants for export to Russia. According to the official lists currently posted by Russia’s Veterinary and Phytosanitary Surveillance Service (VPSS) and FSIS, 12 previously delisted U.S. slaughter facilities have gained approval to resume shipments to Russia.

Two plants with an effective production date of March 22, 2010, are:

85B – Cargill
85O – Cargill

Ten plants with an effective production date of March 25, 2010, are:

17D – John Morrell
221A – Smithfield
244M – Tyson
413 – Smithfield
717 – Farmland
717CR – Farmland
717M – Farmland
13597 – Seaboard
18079 – Smithfield
244W – Tyson (Enhanced Control)

NOTE: USMEF is attempting to confirm these production dates with USDA, but these are the dates currently listed by VPSS.

Seven additional slaughter facilities were never delisted by VPSS. To maintain their eligibility to ship to the Russian Federation, however, these plants must implement an approved Export Verification (EV) program. Plants in this category are:

199N – Hormel (Enhanced control)
242 – Greenwood Packing ( Carolina Pride)
8080 – Sara Lee
19717 – Lynch BBQ
15896 - Abbyland
20748 – SIG International

One additional slaughter facility (320M – Farmland) has an approved EV program and VPSS approval, but does not yet appear on the FSIS-approved list.

A number of U.S. cold storage facilities have also regained access to the Russian market, but many cold storage facilities were never delisted by VPSS.

USMEF will provide further information as it becomes available. In the meantime, please direct any questions to the USMEF Export Services Department at 303-623-6328.
