Trade Show And Chef Training Help Sell More U.S. Meat
USMEF-ASEAN participated in the International Food & Hospitality Show 2002, in Bangkok last month with U.S. companies doing business in Thailand. The show’s 13,000 visitors from all over the Association of South-East Asian Nations (ASEAN) region saw U.S. raw beef cuts, shelf-ready and processed beef and pork on display.
The Thai economy’s recovery (GDP growth in 2001 was 4 percent and 2002 growth is forecast at 4.5 percent) is being led by a revival in consumer spending. USMEF ASEAN Manager Eric Choon reports that Thai malls and restaurants are packed, and sales of durable goods such as cars, radios and television sales are increasing.
Choon also reports that, despite a 53 percent tariff, U.S. top blade muscle, strip loin, rib finger and prime rib are now on the menus of several Thai restaurants as a result of USMEF chef training designed to educate chefs and restaurant owners about the profit potential of using underutilized cuts and how to prepare and incorporate U.S. beef into their restaurants.
