Long-Awaited Festivities To Greet U.S. Beef In Bangkok
USMEF, with the help of the Texas Beef Council, is celebrating the return of U.S. beef in Thailand, starting with a formal event tomorrow evening (March 28) at the residence of U.S. Ambassador to Thailand, Ralph L. Boyce, who will carve the U.S. prime roast beef that will be served as the main course.
Approximately 40 people will attend, including the Minister of Agriculture and officers from the Department of Livestock of Thailand, U.S. Embassy and U.S. Foreign Agricultural Service staff, key meat importers, general managers of five-star hotels and editors from key press.
The event will help cement the strong diplomatic ties between the United States and Thailand and allow media an opportunity to provide high-profile coverage to the re-entrance of U.S. beef into the market.
A second reception will be held April 4 poolside at the Sheraton Grande Sukhumvit hotel in Bangkok for 150 importers, foodservice operators and retailers, featuring U.S. beef cooked Texas style.
The festive event will provide an opportunity for members of the industry to reconnect, thank the trade for their continued support and patience, and provide assurance of the U.S. beef industry’s continued commitment in re-establishing U.S. beef in Thailand.
“The trade is very confident about promoting U.S. beef, as consumer interest is strong,” noted Eric Choon, USMEF director, ASEAN region.
Thailand reopened to U.S. beef Feb. 15, lifting a ban instituted when the United States discovered its first case of bovine spongiform encephalopathy in December 2003. During that year, 752 metric tons of U.S. beef and beef variety meat valued at $2.8 million went to Thailand.

USMEF Kicks Off Fourth Annual Mother’s Day Promotion
The fourth annual USMEF Mother’s Day promotion begins today (March 27) at 82 stores in Mexico City and ends May 12 with a performance of a popular musical called “Besame Mucho” or “Kiss Me More”.
Shoppers buying U.S. pork and beef items at Comercial Mexicana, Chedraui and Gigante stores can collect coupons off the packages and redeem them for tickets to the performance May 12 at the Centro Cultural Telmex, a theater with a seating capacity of 2,700.
The promotion focuses on mothers, who do most of the family food shopping, and enhances the image of U.S. pork and beef with leading retailers and targeted consumer groups.
Last year’s Mother’s Day promotion increased U.S. meat sales 19 percent to 30 percent in participating supermarkets.
