Taiwan Market Still Dominated By Price Issues

Importers told USMEF-Taiwan that bone-in short rib prices have risen recently and boneless short rib and boneless chuck short rib prices will also rise. USMEF encouraged Taiwanese buyers to try chuck flap and in consequence the price has also gone up. Taiwan’s economy is still depressed and economic conditions have hit sales of high-end meat items such as ribeye and tenderloin. Foodservice establishments have turned to frozen fed-cow or no roll high-end meat items to cut costs. Some importers think that restaurants will turn to middle-priced items, such as top blade and chuck flap, but middle items without brands will likely lose their place in the market. Top blade consumption is increasing in both foodservice and retail. More and more restaurants are buying top blade for steaks. On the other hand, U.S. chilled high-end meat items are increasingly seen in both fine dining restaurants and upscale supermarkets.
