Chinese New Year Celebrations Include U.S. Beef
The Chinese New Year starts Feb. 18 and typically is a 15-day celebration including food, festivities and gifts for loved ones. USMEF is encouraging consumers in Taiwan to purchase U.S. beef to help celebrate the New Year.
The Grand Formosa Regent Hotel in Taipei, which recently was awarded by USMEF for the best U.S. beef cuisine, is offering a unique wooden gift box with sliced U.S. prime or Wagyu rib-eye beef packaged inside.
“American beef is known for its beautifully distributed marbling and wonderful texture,” said chef James Chen. “American prime and Wagyu beef have the most succulent taste using the simplest preparation method. Food connoisseurs certainly will appreciate such a superb gift.”
The beef is sliced by world-class chefs and packaged in a souvenir box complete with a bow for gift giving. The hotel is targeting high-end consumers as gift box prices range from US$100 to $275.
The Regent Hotel is a long-standing partner of USMEF in promoting U.S. beef. “We like to feature U.S. beef for our promotions,” said Ellen Chang of the Regent Hotel. “Our customers enjoy the taste and quality of U.S. beef. The promotions we conduct with USMEF have been successful.”
The Chinese New Year is a busy time for supermarkets as consumers purchase special items to prepare and serve during the holiday. USMEF, using USDA Market Access Program funds, cooperated with Sinon supermarket in conducting a U.S. beef promotion Jan. 26 to Feb. 8.
U.S. beef product samples and contests encouraged shoppers to try and buy U.S. beef. Featured cuts included chuck-eye roll, top blade, boneless short ribs, rib fingers and beef shank, which are all appealing to Taiwanese consumers.
The supermarket reports an increase of 20 percent in U.S. beef sales compared to the same time last year when the promotion was conducted.
