Taiwan Approves Selected U.S. Beef Offal Items

The government of Taiwan has approved 13 categories of U.S. beef offal for import.

Eight of these categories have been cleared for export in the FSIS Export Library, with an eligible slaughter date of on or after April 1, 2010. The five remaining categories must be further defined before they are given clearance for trade.

Currently eligible items include:

0206.10.10.00-8 Bone with meat of bovine animals, fresh or chilled
0206.10.90.10-9 Edible tongues of bovine animals, fresh or chilled
0206.10.90.70-6 Edible penis, testes and tails of bovine animals, fresh or chilled
0206.10.90.80-4 Edible skirts of bovine animals, fresh or chilled

0206.29.10.00-7 Bone with meat of bovine animals, frozen
0206.29.90.50-9 Edible penis, testes and tails of bovine animals, frozen

0206.29.90.90-2 Other edible offal of bovine animals, frozen
1602.50.20.19-4 Prepared or preserved meat offal of bovine animals, frozen
1602.50.20.29-2 Prepared or preserved meat offal of bovine animals, canned
1602.50.20.99-7 Other prepared or preserved meat offal of bovine animals

This marks the first time since December 2003 that any U.S. beef items other than muscle cuts have been eligible for export to Taiwan. Trade was limited to boneless beef cuts from under 30-month cattle until October 2009, when market access was expanded to include bone-in muscle cuts.

As noted in the Export Library, it is important to remember that all products, including both muscle cuts and offal, must be produced under the USDA Less-than-30-Month Age-Verification/USDA Quality System Assessment (QSA) Program for Taiwan.

USMEF will provide further information as it becomes available. Please contact Kevin Smith in the USMEF Export Services Department (ksmith@usmef.org or 303-623-6328) with any questions.
