Sustained Increase In Pork Exports Turns Around U.S. Import-Export Deficit
A strong industry partnership, together with a sustained focus on building exports, has turned the United States from a deficit pork importer in 1986 to the world’s second largest net exporter in 2007 (after the EU). Instead of a deficit of 1.036 billion pounds (1986), the United States exported about 2 billion pounds more then it imported in 2007. U.S. pork exports have grown from 86 million pounds carcass weight equivalent in 1986 to 3.1 billion pounds in 2007, according to an analysis of data conducted by the Pork Checkoff and the University of Missouri.
Throughout the world, the U.S. Meat Export Federation (USMEF) is engaged in targeted promotional campaigns to raise the awareness of U.S. pork products, increase customer loyalty, and expand the penetration of our products in export markets. USMEF’s tactics are tailored to the location, and audiences may vary from trade to consumers to retail to HRI (hotel, restaurant and institutions), but each event is geared to support the USMEF mission and the interests of our members. Following are three examples of USMEF pork activities in Mexico, Japan and South Korea.
