USMEF Encourages Consumers To Buy U.S. Chilled Pork
To overcome a slow pork sales season in South Korea, USMEF held an in-store-promotion at a Samsung Tesco store featuring U.S. pork cuts of single-ribbed belly, collar butt, skirt meat and false lean every Thursday to Sunday from Oct 19-29.
It was the first time U.S. chilled pork skirt meat and false lean – a small amount of lean meat located over the blade bone on the portion of the full loin – were offered at the store. Results show sales of these cuts have increased 5 percent since the promotion ended. Approximately 665 pounds sold during the 10-day promotion and 700 pounds sold in 10 days following the promotion.
USMEF is using the same promotion at 10 Samsung Tesco stores through the end of the year. Samsung Tesco operates more than 50 stores in South Korea.
To encourage U.S. pork purchases, USMEF provides samples for customers to taste and recipes to provide preparation and serving ideas.
Statistics through September show South Korea is the fourth largest market for U.S. pork and pork variety meat with a volume of 73,841 metric tons (mt) and value $151.6 million. Chilled pork accounted for approximately 8,000 mt of that total with a value of $27.5 million. Chilled pork volume increased 30 percent and value 34 percent over the same time period last year.
USMEF retail activities like this one are designed to boost sales of U.S. pork products to continue export growth.
