U.S. Beef Now Available At Second Retailer, E-Mart

Starting Thursday (July 26), U.S. beef will be available at all 78 locations of E-Mart, one of the largest discount retail chains in South Korea. The decision to sell U.S. beef comes two weeks after its competitor Lotte Mart became the first discount retailer to restock U.S. beef.

Yonhap News reports the resumption of U.S. beef sales in retail stores has increased sales of domestic and Australian beef; many observers expected these sales to drop because of the price competitiveness and quality of U.S. beef. Yonhap reports pork belly sales have declined slightly since the return of U.S. beef, but overall “consumers are enjoying the benefits of U.S. beef import resumption.’

Meanwhile, there is speculation that the South Korean government will decide soon about whether to accept bone-in U.S. beef products.
