South Korea Delays Decision On Resuming U.S. Beef Imports

South Korea's animal quarantine committee postponed a decision on whether to resume imports of U.S. beef, the Agriculture Ministry said today.

The quarantine committee, composed of government officials, veterinarians and consumer groups, is now scheduled to reconvene in December.

South Korea banned U.S. beef in December 2003 after the first case of BSE in the United States was announced.

Korea was the third largest market for U.S. beef and beef variety meat in 2003. That year, the United States exported 246,595 metric tons of beef and beef variety meat to Korea valued at $814.6 million, 26 percent higher than 2002.
