Sales Triple During U.S. Pork Promotion At Costco Stores
A 10-day U.S. pork promotion at five Costco stores in Seoul, Daejon and Daegu resulted in sales figures tripling for eight U.S. pork products. Sales increased 3.12 times during the promotion, which was higher than Costco’s forecast of 2.29. Total sales volume was approximately 55 metric tons, so each store sold more than 1 ton of U.S. pork per day.
This is part of a continuous effort by USMEF to promote U.S. pork as a core product at retail stores to increase sales and consumer product awareness. The promotion featured U.S. pork collar butt, single ribbed belly, spare ribs and pork sausages. Spare ribs were merchandized for barbecue and cubed for a traditional Korean style steamed rib dish.
The most popular item was the cubed spare ribs, which recorded 6.72 times regular sales. Spare ribs sold almost 5 times typical sales.
U.S. pork booths at each store provided samples for tasting during the promotion period. Costco gave discount coupons for the U.S. pork products to customers at the store entrance. This is the first time Costco has issued special coupons for fresh food products.
This is a significant move for U.S. pork since Costco has a wide outreach and solid reputation for selling the highest quality products. Due to the success of the promotion, Costco indicated it wants to promote U.S. pork regularly using store coupons.
