Korean Pork Imports Up
Just published South Korean import figures show that South Korea imported 9,770 mt of U.S. pork products in the first eight months of 2002, a 30 percent increase over the same period last year (6,746 mt). South Korea’s total pork imports increased from 63,778 mt in January–August, 2001 to 82,709 mt.
Domestic pork carcass prices reached a peak in June — 3,093 won/kg — at June 2002 but tumbled to 2,000 won/kg in September, due to abundant local supplies and a decreasing in consumption. Cheap bellies (4,000-5,000 won/kg) from the European Union (EU) have hit the prices of domestic product and other imports. ($1 = 1,224 won)
