Korean Beef Import Market Continues To Improve
Just-released figures from the South Korean government underline the continuing recovery of the Korean beef import market and sales of U.S. beef to Korea. In the first nine months of 2002, South Korea imported 230,374 mt, 91 percent higher than the same period in 2001. Imports of U.S. beef items rose 119 percent from 67,021 mt (Jan.-Sept. 2001) to 146,962 mt (Jan.-Sept. 2002). The U.S. captured a 64 percent share of the beef import market. Australia trailed with 25 percent.
U.S. pork imports climbed 32 percent from 8,175 mt (Jan.-Sept. 2001) to 10,766 mt (Jan.-Sept. 2002). South Korea’s total pork imports were 29 percent higher at 71,567 mt.
