South Korea Beef Export Update

The South Korean beef market will officially open to U.S. exports at 5 a.m. (EDT) tomorrow (Thursday, July 10), it was reported today by the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

Companies that are eligible to export to South Korea may begin slaughter after 5 a.m. on July 10.  USDA and the Agricultural Marketing Service (AMS) will post a list of eligible companies.

Later today, USMEF will provide an update with specific export guidelines, including eligibility of product that is in the pipeline, and product that was produced prior to the closing of the Korean market on Oct. 5, 2007.

It is important to note that while exports of T-bone and Porterhouse steaks must be labeled as being derived from cattle younger than 30 months of age for the first 180 days after the South Korean market opens, currently no plant has been approved by USDA AMS to ship T-bone or Porterhouse steaks.
