Korean Newspaper Says Government Will Lift U.S. Beef Ban

According to a major South Korean newspaper, the South Korean government has decided to lift its ban on imports of U.S. beef. The Chosun Ilbo’s English-language Web site quotes an unnamed Foreign and Trade Ministry source, who said, “It has been concluded that there are no problems with the safety of U.S. beef, so the ministry will announce the lifting of the ban next month.”

The government plans to negotiate detailed import conditions with the U.S. within the year, the article continues, and beef imports would resume during the first half of next year.

The Chosun Ilbo also quoted an agriculture ministry official who blamed current domestic beef prices on the ban: “The current high price of Korean beef is due to the ban on U.S. beef. Resuming imports of U.S. beef with its competitive price and quality would bring down beef prices.”
