Singapore Study Team Visits Taiwan for Educational Sessions on U.S. Beef, Pork

Following USMEF-Singapore’s recent “Rediscovering U.S. Meat with Chef Adam Levin” event, USMEF continued efforts to build momentum in the ASEAN region by increasing exposure for secondary cuts of U.S. beef and pork through a study team visit to Taiwan.

With support from the Beef Checkoff and Pork Checkoff programs and the cooperation of USMEF-Taiwan, a study team of nine Singapore HRI (hotel, restaurant and institutional) representatives, importers and distributors visited Taipei for an intensive four-day, on-site educational session on the versatility of U.S. beef and pork. The objective was to instill loyal buying intentions in these food service executives through the team visit and to create awareness for these secondary beef and pork cuts as a complement to the more customary loin cuts and middle meats sold in the Singapore market.

The study team was exposed to various cuts of U.S. beef and pork through a cutting demonstration. Beef cuts featured included chuck eye roll, chuck flap, boneless short ribs, top blade muscle, chuck short ribs and pastrami plate. The alternative pork cut featured was pork collar.

Leveraging on the foreign market relevancy, the team visited six different restaurant concepts specializing in Hot Pot, Sukiyaki, Yakiniku, Teppanyaki and traditional beef noodle soup. They also visited traditional markets as well as different categories of hypermarts and supermarkets to experience diversified meat marketing strategies at the retail level.
