Seng in First Class of Meat Industry Hall of Fame Inductees

USMEF President and CEO Philip Seng was one of the 21 charter members inducted into the Meat Industry Hall of Fame earlier this week at Chicago’s Union League Club.

“It is humbling to be included in a group that has contributed so much to the U.S. meat industry,” Seng said. “I am fortunate to have had the opportunity to serve such a wonderful industry and to represent it internationally for so many years.”

The Meat Industry Hall of Fame was founded in 2008 as the permanent repository for the accomplishments of the meat, poultry and livestock industries’ leading figures and historic events. The initial class of inductees was announced in August after being elected by the Hall of Fame’s board of trustees, which represents livestock production, meatpacking, processing, marketing and scientific research.

“It was amazing to be in the same room with so many successful, dynamic leaders whose passion for their profession was so evident and heartfelt,” said Hall of Fame President Chuck Jolley.

Seng joined USMEF as its Asian director in 1982. He served in that capacity until 1988, when he became USMEF’s vice president of international programs. He was named president and chief executive officer in January 1990. Throughout his tenure, Seng has played a central role in expanding the presence of U.S. beef and pork in Asia and across the globe.

Seng has also been active in a number of other organizations. He is the only American to serve as president of the International Meat Secretariat, where he served four terms. He also was president of the Japan-American Society in Colorado, and has served on the President’s Agricultural Policy Advisory Council in Washington.

More information about the event, including the complete list of inductees, can be found online.   Nomination forms for next year’s class are also available, and must be received by March 21, 2010.
