Government Announces U.S. Beef Again Eligible For Import

As predicted earlier by USMEF, the South Korea Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry (MAF) in a statement released to media in Seoul Friday (Sept. 8), said it “has decided to give the final approval to 36 plants whose sanitation and BSE safety management meets the health requirements for importation of beef agreed between Korea and the United States after completion of the second audits on U.S. beef export plants and hearing from experts opinions on September 7.” The announcement allows for the import of “deboned beef from slaughtered cattle under 30 months.” In the statement, Korean government officials estimated that the first shipments could be available to consumers in about 25 days, allowing for shipping time and up to 10 days to complete first inspections.

In a statement released in Seoul, USMEF President and CEO Philip Seng said, “The U.S. Meat Export Federation is pleased that the Korean government has announced the resumption of U.S. beef import eligibility after a review of U.S. beef safety systems and protocols.

“USMEF believes that the U.S. beef import resumption will give an opportunity to Korean consumers to choose safe and high quality beef. The U.S. industry will continue to do its best for Korean consumers to trust and enjoy U.S. beef.”

In statement issued in Washington, Secretary of Agriculture Mike Johanns said, “Although the agreement was signed back in January, several months of cooperative effort between our two countries have been necessary, which included two visits by Korean audit teams to confirm the efficacy of the U.S. inspection system."

Johanns added: "We are mindful that significant technical issues exist that must be resolved. We will continue to work with Korea to address these matters in the coming days."
