U.S. Pork Consistency And Quality Prominent In Trade Visit

A team of pork buyers and importers from different regions in Russia were in the United States for a week visiting U.S. pork plants and meeting with exporters to learn about U.S. pork characteristics, including the industry’s consistent and quality production system.

USMEF Russia staff Maria Kulakhmetova and Galina Kochubeeva led the team, consisting of 12 representatives from Kaliningrad, Yekaterinburg, Moscow, St. Petersburg and Vladivostok, in efforts to introduce buyers to middle cuts and enhanced product for growing upscale foodservice and retail sectors in addition to leg and shoulder parts for processing and standard retail outlets.

The U.S. pork industry has a reputation for supplying raw material of a consistently high quality to the growing Russian processing and retail sectors. As a result, Russian buyers have a preference for U.S. pork when it is priced at levels comparable to those offered by other suppliers.

Russia’s retail sector is developing as consumer purchasing power increases. Other meat products, including pre-cooked, convenience and value-added products, are gaining in popularity.

During the visit, team members toured U.S. pork plants to see consistent production practices firsthand that result in high quality products. The team also went to Iowa State University for a seminar on pork attributes and safety standards.

The team met with USMEF member companies to form new business relationships. Nine companies showed active interest in the U.S. pork industry and are ready to purchase more muscle cuts like U.S. pork tenderloin.

Last year, U.S. pork and pork variety meat exports to Russia doubled 2005 volume to 82,677 metric tons. Value also increased 127 percent from 2005 to $163.9 million.
