Update On Russia Customs Office Closures
On Monday, USMEF reported Russia on Nov. 17 published a new list of customs posts for meat imports that will go into effect 90 days from that date of publication. In response to questions from members, USMEF is providing additional clarification. USMEF has confirmed that custom points of main ports in the Far East (Vladivostok, Nakhodka and Magadan) as well as the Baltic customs office located in the St. Petersburg port have been removed from the list of customs offices eligible for the clearance of imported meat products.
It is very important for members to note that these are customs office/point closures and NOT port closures. For example, while the Baltic customs office of St. Petersburg is closed, there are three additional customs offices for the St. Petersburgport that still can be utilized.
There has been opposition to this decision from importers and exporters involved in the Russian meat market. USMEF delivered a letter yesterday (Dec. 5) to the Russian Customs authority opposing this decision. As a result, some expect Russia to publish a revised list of custom posts that would be an annex to the Nov. 17 decision, although there is no definitive timeline associated with this decision. USMEF is hopeful that at least one of the Far East customs posts will be included in this annex. USMEF will provide updated information as it becomes available.
