Russian Meat Imports Soar, But Dispute Hit Poultry Imports In First Half Of Year
Russia imported 28.8 percent more red meat (501,800 mt) in the first half of 2002 than in the same period in 2001 (389,600 mt), according to just-released Russian official statistics. The other states of the former Soviet Union provided 15 percent of the imports. Poultry imports fell 3.2 percent due to the dispute between Russia and the United States which ended last month.
In the first six months of 2002, the United States exported 38,468 mt of beef (including variety meats) to Russia, an increase of 16 percent over 2001. Pork imports to Russia, however, fell 65 percent to 8,097 mt in the same period.
