Ongoing USMEF Pork Efforts Set Foundation For Continued Success

With its Feb. 1 relaxation on pork imports from the United States, Russia has expanded opportunities for U.S. pork producers and exporters. Russia had required all pork products to be tested or frozen to control trichinae. In co-operation with USDA, USMEF worked to show that the extremely low incidence of trichinae in the United States did not warrant the additional expense of individual animal tests. As of Feb. 1, Russian authorities agreed and lifted the testing requirement.

The USMEF Moscow office worked with the USMEF London and Denver offices and Russian importers in preparation of the changes brought about by the lifting of the restrictions. Meanwhile, the USMEF Moscow and St. Petersburg offices have been active throughout in providing supplier details and lists of U.S. pork exporters to Russian importers who want to purchase U.S. pork cuts and variety meat. They also have distributed Russian versions of the U.S. pork and variety meat catalogs, costing manuals and pork leaflets to importers, traders and meat processing companies.  

Through November 2006 the United States had exported 80,594 metric tons of pork and pork variety meats to Russia, valued at almost $160 million. This value was a 129 percent increase over the same period in 2005.
