No Deal On Russian Poultry Export Certificates

U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) officials are trying to negotiate a settlement with Russian agriculture officials to avoid a cessation of Russian imports of U.S. poultry after the August 1 deadline Moscow has imposed for new safety certificates on chicken and turkey imported from the United States.

USDA spokeswoman Alisa Harrison said today (July 2) that no deal had been made with Russia, and a ban may come into effect on August 1. Russia previously banned U.S. poultry imports from March 20 to April 15 over concerns about salmonella contamination on U.S. poultry shipments and other U.S. industry safety standards.

U.S. industry officials told Reuters that without a deal by the end of this week, exporters are not likely to ship cargoes, which can take about three weeks to arrive in Russia.
