Russia May Hold to June 1 Health Certificate Implementation
Russia May Hold to June 1 Health Certificate Implementation
USMEF and the USDA met separately with Russian officials yesterday in Paris to discuss U.S. pork exports to Russia. It is not yet clear what was decided in the meeting between the two governments, especially in regard to the implementation of a new health certificate for U.S. pork exports to Russia. The new certificate is scheduled to take effect on Monday, June 1. Prior to yesterday’s meetings the industry was under the impression that the June 1 date would be postponed, but the Russian side is said to be holding fast to the June 1 implementation date.
In the meantime, USMEF advises extreme caution in sending any shipments to Russia with health certificates dated June 1 and after. USMEF understands that USDA inspectors will continue to sign the current Russia pork health certificate, but it is not clear whether Russia will accept that certificate once product arrives in the country.
Follow up conversations between USMEF and the USDA will likely occur over the next few days, and we will be seeking industry input early next week. We will continue to keep members apprised of the situation as we learn more.
