Brazil Leads All Rivals In Russian Pork Import Market

Brazilian pork continues to dominate Russia’s pork import market. The most recent statistics available show that Brazilian pork made up 56 percent of the import market in the first eight months of 2002. Brazilian prices rose in September to $990 per metric ton (mt), but have since dropped to $950-960 per mt. Retail and processor demand for pork was brisk in October. USMEF-Russia reports that pork sides, loins, collars, shoulders, trimmings, and fat were in strong demand. The U.S. (with France) is the sixth largest supplier of pork to Russia after Brazil, China, Denmark, Germany, and Canada.

Attractive prices in October inspired strong future orders of U.S. pork cuts — picnic 72 c.l. and 75 c.l., trimmings 72 c.l. and back fat.
