Romania Will Require European Union Standards For Beef And Pork Imports

In a letter from the Chief Veterinarian of Romania, Dr. Ion Agafitei, to the USDA Foreign Agricultural Service, Romania will not delay the implementation of beef and pork import rules that are consistent with the European Union (EU) third country meat directive. In other words, any U.S. red meat exported to Romania must conform to EU standards, including having the plant approved for shipment to the EU.

According to this letter, Romania will not permit a delay until it accedes to the EU as requested by the U.S. government. Any product shipped after Dec. 19 must conform to EU standards in order to be accepted by Romania.

FSIS Changes Letterhead Certificate Required For Meat Products

Meat products from bovines, swine, sheep, goats, horsemeat, poultry, farmed game, domestic rabbits and wild game exported to the European Union now require the Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) Letterhead Certificate for meat products, "Veterinary Certificate for Meat Products, into the European Community" in English. This letterhead certificate is also available in Spanish, French, Italian, German and Netherlands.

These letterhead certificates are temporary until FSIS forms can be developed and made available. Notification will be posted when the FSIS form is available for ordering.

The FSIS letterhead certificate for meat products for consignment to the European Community supersedes FSIS Form 9180-13 Public Health Certificate for Meat Products; FSIS Form 9180-11 Animal Health Certificate for Meat Products Intended for Consignment to the European Community (English); and FSIS Form 9180-12 Animal Health Certificate for Meat Products Intended for consignment to the European Community (English/German), which are obsolete.

For meat products destined for a non-EU country that will be stored in or transited through an EU country, the FSIS letterhead certificate, "Veterinary certificate for meat products for transit/storage in the European community" is required after Dec. 17, 2005.

For more information, see the Export Requirements for the European Union in the FSIS Export Library.
