Romania Mandates Exports From EU-Approved Plants

The Romanian Veterinary and Food-Safety Authority recently approved a regulation that will have a major impact on red meat exports to Romania. According to the Foreign Agricultural Service (FAS), the regulation will mandate that after Dec. 19 only EU-approved plants will be allowed to export to Romania and covers cattle, hogs and sheep as well as beef, pork and lamb, though not poultry.

U.S. pork (including variety meat) exports to Romania are up 358 percent (19,105 metric tons) in the latest statistics from the USDA (Jan.-Aug., 2005), and U.S. beef (including variety meat) exports totaled 2,783 metric tons in the same period. This success was made possible by bilateral agreements between the United States and Romania, which allowed exports from federally-approved plants.

A full report on the Romanian regulation change will be posted on the FAS attaché report Web site http://www.fas.usda.gov/scriptsw/attacherep/default.asp shortly.
