Producer Outreach Paramount at 2010 Commodity Classic

USMEF President-elect Keith Miller had the opportunity to speak with dozens of crop producers this week at one of the world’s largest agricultural conventions. Miller is representing USMEF at the 2010 Commodity Classic, which runs March 4-6 in Anaheim, Calif.

“This is a really positive and beneficial event where we get a chance to meet with many of USMEF’s funding partners,” Miller said. “And we get to find out what’s on the mind of people trying to make a living on the farm. That’s who our message is really targeting.”

While some producers attending the conference have a lengthy history with USMEF, Miller especially enjoys speaking with those less familiar with the organization.

“That’s the most important thing we can do at this event,” he said. “To educate them and show them that when we export beef and pork, all of American agriculture wins. We’re shipping grain overseas, but doing it with a finished product. So we’re adding value and creating jobs for Americans working on farms and ranches, in packing plants and in the shipping industry. Meat exports provide a big boost to the entire economy of the United States.”

Miller said the Commodity Classic also provides USMEF with an opportunity to thank the feedgrain and oilseed organizations that have recently increased their support of meat exports.

“Their support has been especially important during these difficult economic times,” he said. “They really stepped to the plate in support of pork and beef producers in an effort to keep American agriculture profitable and successful.”

U.S. Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack addressed the convention Friday morning. To the applause of the producers on hand, he used the venue to announce the reopening of Russia to U.S. pork.
