U.S. Beef Exports Increase 11 Percent In Value
For January-May 2003

According to just-released USDA figures, U.S. beef (including variety meat) exports for Jan.-May 2003 were less than 1 percent higher in volume (504,939 mt) but 11 percent higher in value ($1.44 billion) compared to the first five months of 2002. U.S. beef muscle exports for the first five months of 2003 were 3 percent higher in volume (340,048 mt) than Jan.-May 2002 exports and 16 percent higher in value ($1.182 billion).

U.S. beef muscle exports to Japan for Jan.-May 2003 were 22 percent higher in volume (122,142 mt) and 45 percent higher in value ($459.8 million).

U.S. Pork Exports Dip Slightly

U.S. pork (including variety meat) exports were 1 percent lower in volume (298,491 mt) in the first five months of 2003 compared to 2002, and 1 percent lower in value ($633.0 million). U.S. pork (including variety meat) exports to Japan for Jan.-May 2003 were 5 percent higher in volume (124,472 mt) and 5 percent lower in value ($353.7 million). U.S. pork (including variety meat) exports to South Korea were 78 percent higher in volume (14,063 mt) and 160 percent higher in value ($34.8 million).
