Newly-elected President Could Complete Free Trade Agreement With United States

Alan Garcia’s election as president of Peru could pave the way to completing a free trade agreement between Peru and the United States, potentially eliminating or lowering tariffs on many items, including U.S. beef and pork.

Garcia, a self-proclaimed moderate, won the presidential election Sunday in Peru, defeating the leftist army nationalist Ollanta Humala, who was supported by the anti-American Venezuelan leader Hugo Chavez.

For the past 18 months, the United States and Peru have been negotiating a free trade agreement.

Peru currently accepts U.S. pork and beef products. All U.S. beef products (boneless, bone-in and variety meat) became eligible May 31.
