Seng Seeks New Solutions To Trade Problems

USMEF President and CEO Philip Seng today told members of Meat New Zealand that with worldwide demand for red meat growing, exporting nations must work together to find new ways to bring down international trade barriers. Seng, also president of the International Meat Secretariat, said rising world population and advancing personal incomes will result in continued growth in worldwide red meat demand. Further, he noted, major meat producers will be marketing a growing share of their domestic production internationally. As current World Trade Organization negotiations continue, Seng said it will be important for exporting nations to insist on the elimination of export subsidies, a reduction in all tariffs to 15 percent, an increase in tariff rate quotas (TRQ) by 20 percent, and a limit to trade-distorting domestic support to 5 percent of the value of agriculture. And, in the spirit of freer trade, Seng said nations should not agree to lower tariffs and other steps to freer trade only to replace them with new trade barriers. In emerging markets, Seng cited the success of the recent joint venture between the U.S., New Zealand and Australia to build beef demand in Taiwan. “While competing aggressively for market share and retail space, we have worked together to build awareness and interest in beef,” Seng said. ”If ‘a rising tide raises all ships,’ then all of us will benefit from higher sales. It’s a new solution and the first of many new solutions that producing nations should explore.” Seng will be in Japan later this week following up on the aisareru campaign there.
