New English Translation of Mexico’s Import Regulations Now Available
A number of exporters have recently encountered difficulties with Mexico’s official regulations governing import of meat, carcasses, viscera and offals at animal health verification points. To help improve inspections and make product movement run more smoothly, USMEF is making a newly translated English-language version of these procedures and requirements – popularly known as NOM-30 regulations - available online.
Originally promulgated in 1995 by Mexico’s Secretariat of Agriculture, Livestock Industry and Rural Development (SAGARPA), NOM-30 regulations provide guidance regarding batch inspections, packaging and labeling, procedures to be followed at all verification points, and criteria for acceptance or rejection. Additional details are outlined in the regulations regarding such issues as blood clots, bruises, bone fragments, stains, lesions and presence of foreign material. Exporters should keep in mind that while the content of these regulations has remained fairly consistent in recent years, interpretation and enforcement may vary over time, due to changes in administration, regulatory personnel and other circumstances.
Questions regarding these regulations should be directed to Paul Clayton at pclayton@usemef.org or Courtney Heller at cheller@usmef.org, or by calling 303-623-MEAT (6328).
