Mexico’s Cabinet Changes Include Return of Former Agriculture Secretary

Earlier this week, Mexican President Felipe Calderon announced several changes in his Cabinet as he reached the midpoint of his six-year term. Included among these changes is the appointment of Francisco Mayorga to lead Mexico’s Department of Livestock, Agriculture, Rural Development, Fisheries and Food (SAGARPA). Mayorga replaces Alberto Cardenas, who had headed the agency since December 2006.

Mayorga is no stranger to SAGARPA, having served as secretary in 2005 and 2006 under former president Vicente Fox. Mayorga is from the state of Jalisco, where he served as president of the Regional Chamber of the Manufacturing Industry, coordinator of the Council of Industrial Chambers, and president of the Agricultural Council. Mayorga also has extensive experience in the livestock feed business and his family is heavily involved with the cattle industry. He is considered a strong supporter of NAFTA and is well-respected within Mexico’s agricultural industry.

“With Mexico being the largest combined market for U.S. beef and pork exports, our industry obviously has a significant interest in the direction and focus of SAGARPA,” said Chad Russell, USMEF regional director for Mexico and the Dominican Republic. “Sec. Mayorga clearly understands the importance of agricultural trade between the U.S. and Mexico and he has both the business and governmental experience needed to lead SAGARPA very effectively.”
