Japan-Mexico FTA Negotiators Fail To Agree On Pork

Mexico’s bid for a free-trade agreement (FTA) with Japan has stumbled due to Japan’s refusal to allow tariff-free access to Mexican pork. Although Japan's trade minister Shoichi Nakagawa told reporters talks would continue, he was unsure that an agreement would be reached in the foreseeable future.

Japan has only signed an FTA with Singapore, an island nation with little agriculture. Ongoing FTA Negotiations with Thailand are likely to be difficult because Thailand exports large volumes of rice.
