Twenty years ago a devastating earthquake measuring 8.1 on the Richter scale jolted Mexico City early in the morning on Sept. 19. Of a population of 18 million, approximately 10,000 people were killed and 50,000 were injured.
The anniversary of this event coupled with recent natural disasters in the United States emphasize the need for emergency training and procedures for all citizens.
USMEF sponsored a civic event in Mexico City where 25 children with ages ranging from 7 to 15 participated in a drill with firefighters and paramedics to learn what to do in emergency situations. USMEF provided t-shirts for the children to wear that featured the USMEF logo, El Cerdo es Bueno (Pork Is Good) logo and Beef Checkoff logo.
There was also a first aid exhibition for more than 150 parents, civil protection authorities and media that included CPR training, immobilization transportation and rescue techniques.
USMEF also provided free barbecued samples of U.S. beef and pork to the participants after the event in addition to distributing U.S. red meat nutrition tips, safe handling procedures and USMEF baseball caps.
